Mr. Schaffer is a Senior Manager in the Audit and Accounting Services Department. He participates in the performance of audits, reviews, and compilations for not-for-profit clients, for-profit clients, and defined contribution and defined benefit plans. His responsibilities include performing audits in accordance with OMB Uniform Guidance, and he is familiar with the compliance requirements associated with OMB Uniform Guidance and the testing of those requirements.
Eric has experience performing audits and reviews of clients in various industries across the for-profit, not-for-profit, and government sectors, including real estate, catering and restaurants, information technology, community colleges, and mental health. He also has a large base of defined contribution and defined benefit plan audit clients. Eric enjoys establishing professional relationships with his clients and learning how each business operates, as well as providing value add recommendations surrounding financial reporting and internal controls.
While working as a staff and senior internal auditor at a publicly traded real estate investment trust for several years, he gained experience with SOX control testing, performing continuous auditing procedures over fixed assets and new lease abstractions, as well as segregation of duties and user access. He also learned valuable knowledge of how an internal control environment is established and monitored in the public environment.
He also has a strong knowledge of ACL Analytics, data extraction and analysis software, which he has experience utilizing to perform journal entry data and disbursement testing for fraud and other irregularities, as well as various ad hoc uses when dealing with large data sets.
He has a Master’s degree in Accounting from Kent State University and a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance from Hiram College.
Eric enjoys traveling and spending time with his wife, daughter, and two collies. Eric is an active member of the Cleveland All-Breed Training Club, a local not-for-profit organization, and enjoys doing agility with one of his collies. Eric also played four years of baseball at the collegiate level and has played 17 summer seasons and counting with the Portage South baseball team in the Northeast Ohio Roy Hobbs Baseball League.
